Effect of Perceived Parenting Styles and Childhood Memories on Emotional Expression The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of perceived parenting styles and childhood memories on emotional expression. The study sample consisted of 260 individuals, 151 women and 109 men, aged between 18 and 75. The study employed the Young Parenting Scale to assess perceived parenting styles, the Early Memories of Warmth and Safeness Scale to evaluate the quality of childhood memories, and the Berkeley Emotional Expression Scale to measure the level of emotional expression. Memories of childhood warmth and safeness were found to be positively correlated with emotional expression. The maternal parenting styles account for 10% of the variance in emotional expression, while the paternal parenting styles account for 7%. Maternal and paternal parenting styles collectively account for 15% of the variance in emotional expression. Individuals whose parents had passed away recalled their parents' parenting styles in a more positive light. Women were observed to express their emotions more frequently than men, and men evaluated their childhood memories in a more positive manner than women. Female participants perceived their parents' parenting styles to be more negative than male participants. Individuals whose primary caregiver was neither the mother nor the father perceived their mothers as more normative compared to those whose primary caregiver was the mother, and those whose primary caregiver was the father perceived their mothers as more emotionally depriving compared to those whose primary caregiver was the mother.
