The effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) goggles integrated vocabulary teaching activities on vocabulary retention and vocabulary learning motivation

In this study, the effects of using VR integrated vocabulary teaching activities in an English preparatory school at a university in Istanbul on vocabulary retention and vocabulary learning motivation was investigated. Vocabulary was taught with VR integrated vocabulary teaching activities and traditional vocabulary activities to 47 students divided into experimental and control groups during 8 weeks. During the period, various tests were applied. Obtained data were analyzed statistically. After 15 weeks, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a focus group consisting 9 of students from the experimental group. The obtained data were analyzed by using discourse analysis. As a result of the research, it was found out that using VR integrated vocabulary teaching activities increased short-term and long-term vocabulary retention. As a result of the semi-structured interviews, it was found that VR integrated vocabulary teaching had positive effects on increasing motivation, productivity, interaction, vocabulary retention, vocabulary expansion and comprehension. Moreover, it was found that using VR in language lessons is entertaining, facilitates native-like pronunciation and teaches the target language speaking country's culture.
