Effects of CO-60 welded radiation in various doses on mechanical properties of polypropylene-polyethylene blends

Materials with different shapes and properties are obtained by processing polymers easily. These materials are used in almost every area of the industry and therefore in daily life due to their low density, high temperature and electrical resistances, their resistance to chemicals and their high mechanical resistance. Polymer products are used in industry by themselves, although they are often used with with various additives. Most of these additives function without incorporating the polymer structure, while some of them benefit by altering the structural and therefore physical properties of the polymer. In the literature, it is known that polypropylene interacts with radiation to cause degradation in the structure of polymer. In this study, the polymer mixtures obtained by mixing different amounts of Polypropylene PP MH 418 and LDPE I22-19T samples with different molecular weights were applied radiation at 60, 30, 50, 70, 100 kGy. Melt flow rates, hardness, mechanical analysis (Tensile strength at break, at yield and elongation at break) and thermal analysis (DSC, TG) of the samples were examined. The effect of radiation applied from 60Co source to PP MH418 + LDPE I 2219T polymer blends at different rates was investigated for the effect of these mixtures on Melt Flow Rate, Hardness, Strain Strain, Tensile Stress and Elongation at Break. Generally, in samples with a mixing ratio of 100/0 and 75/25, the radiation dose tended to increase up to 50 kGy, then to decrease or to remain the same. When the DSC analysis of the samples were examined, depending on the amount of radiation increased, decrease were observed for Tm, crystallization temperature Tc, melting enthalpy ∆Hf, crystallization enthalpy ,Hc and the Xc values of the crystallization rate . In the thermogravimetric TG analysis of the samples, the mass-loss losses were investigated. When the changes in the temperatures of the mixes on the mixes increased by 2%, 50% and 98% mass losses, no significant change was observed.
