Abstract (EN)
Otitis media with effusion(OME) is one of the leading causes of hearing loss in children. Etiopathogenesis of the diseases has not been completely elucidated. The aim this study is to investigate presence of fungi in OME. From March 2013 to October 2013, a number of 45 children with proven otitis media with effusion and insert ventilation tube to ear drump subjected to the case series study at at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic of Firat University Hospital, Elazig, Turkey. There were three groups in the study. In group 1, the range of age was 0- 3 years. In group 2, the range of age was 4-6 years. In group 3, the range of age was 7-10 years. At the operation, samples collected from eksternal ear canal, nasopharenx and effusion fluids. The samples were examined under light microscobe for presence spor of fungi. Than the samples were cultured on Saboraud Glucose Agar. PCR analysis was performed for fluid of effusion by used multiplexed tandem PCR technique and PCR results were analised by used Easy-Plex robotic system(AusDiagnostics Pty Ltd, Australia). In this study, spors were not seen in microscopic examination and mycologycal cultured were negative. According to PCR analysis, 13 samples (28.88%) were positive for fungal DNA. In the present study, fungi were determined in middle ear fluids of children with OME. Our results were similar to other studies previously conducted. However, both our study and other studies do not clearly demonstrated that fungi were one agent of pathogens OME or elemant of normal flora of the middle ear. For this, more extensive studies are required to elucidate the role of fungi in pathogenesis of OME. Key words: otitis media with effusion, fungi
