Terracotta statuettes found at Ege gübre excavation

ABSTRACTThe Master ThesisTerracotta Statuettes found at Ege Gübre ExcavationSeçil ÇokoğulluDokuz Eylül UniversityInstitute of Social SciencesDepartmant of Classical ArchaeologyEge Gübre is located approximately 1200 m south of Kyme which issituated on the Nemrut Harbour to the south of the Çandarlı Bay. It takes itsname from the Ege Gübre Factory in which it is sited.The geographical researches which have been carried out on the sitebesides the archaeological excavations, show that the Ege Gübre excavations islocated on the side of a swampy pit. There haven?t been found any architecturalremains other than a well, a building of which only the foundations of its fourwalls are preserved and a stone-paved area. It has been understood that rows ofbig stones were used as a precaution against the rising of the swamp water. Theshort distance between Ege Gübre and Kyme makes one think that the city andthe area in which a dence amount of ceramic fragments have been found mayhave been in relation. The ceramics and the terra-cotta figurines are also aproof of this relationIt has been seen that the groups of Figurines of Squatting Boy and theseated Woman Figurines with Child are identical to the ones which are thoughtto be of Kyme origin. Examples of these figurines which are thought to be inrelation with the cult of mother-goddess were found in the sanctuary and itssurroundings.Besides the body and head fragments of female figurines, similarexamples of the head pieces of male figurines were generally found mainly atKyme and at Myrina, Larisa and Neontheikos which are neighbours of the city.It has been seen that the base and wing fragments which belong in the OtherFigurine Fragments group are also from the surrounding cities.As a result of the comparisons made between the Ege Gübre figurinesand the figurines from Kyme, Myrina, Larisa, Neontheikos, Western Anatoliaand Mainland Greece it has been understood that their dates range from the 5thcentury BC to the 1st century BC. It is thought that the city may be a annexesituated out of the city of Kyme. It is also possible to say that the findings haveran down from Pınar Tepe on the skirts of which the excavation site if locatedand where the architectural remains dating to the Hellenistic period werefound.Key Words: 1) Ege Gübre 2) Statuettes 3) Cyme4) Aiolis 5) Terracotta
