The research of the values in the educative movies as part of universal values

Value is the criterion that an individual and society uses when evaluating their thoughts and behaviors. It is also the whole of the material and spiritual elements that nations have. Many factors, especially the family, are effective in transferring the values that represent the whole of the material and spiritual elements of a society from generation to generation. Today, mass media, which have an effective transmission power, is one of the main elements that provide value transfer. Especially communication tools such as television and cinema have an important place in providing this transmission. Movies broadcasted on television or cinema screens play an active role in processing and transfer ring of values as well as entertaining and informing. As a matter of fact, the fact that wars are experienced today and that people are in conflict with each other show that there are still deficiencies in some values. Universal values that hold societies together should be developed in order to eliminate this deficiency. Continuation of this development will be possible by internalizing universal values by individuals and societies. Cinema films, one of the communication tools, have the power to be an effective material to ensure internalization. In this study, some films with educational content, which are among the communication elements, were examined in the dimension of universal values. In addition, whether the universal values determined in the educational films coincide with the values in the UNESCO list of living values or not was examined. Again, in this research, it was aimed to draw the framework of other values that can be gained as values education with film material. In the data sources of the research, Iranian production; Children of Heaven (Mecid Mecidi, 1997), made in India; Black (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, 2005), Where Is My Friend's Home? (Abbas Kiarostami, 1987), USA made; Losing Hope (Gabriele Muccino, 2006), Made in France, Switzerland and Germany; Choir (Christophe Barratier, 2005), Irish and British made; My Left Foot (Jim Sheridan, 1989) and Turkey made; 120 (MuratSaraçoğlu and Özhan Eren, 2008) films are included. Educational films have been selected from among different country productions in order to represent different geographies. In this respect, maximum diversity sampling was used in the study. In addition, criterion sampling was used by choosing among drama films with an IMDb score of at least 7.0. Content analysis method was used to analyze the movies in the research. In this context, it is tried to determine how the universal values are included in the films behaviorally or verbally, and the ways in which the films deal with these values are presented with sample dialogues and scenes. The films were analyzed periodically by watching the sources and using the knowledge and experience gained by scanning the sources. In addition, expert opinions were consulted while analyzing the findings. As a result of the research, in educational films that are media elements; It has been determined that the universal values of benevolence, solidarity and sharing, perseverance, compassion, love and affection, responsibility, success, trust and self-confidence, rigthteousness and honesty, hope, respect, cooperation, happiness, kindness, forgiveness, justice, friendship, knowledge and scientificness, independence and freedom, unity and togetherness and patriotism are processed. In addition, it has been determined that the values correspond to the values of benevolence, responsibility, love, honesty, respect, happiness, freedom, unity and solidarity, which are on the UNESCO list of values. In addition to these results, values that could contribute to the educators and parents who will make the movie watch (loyalty, sacrifice, patience) were also determined. Moreover, it was concluded that the most emphasized values in the universal values group in all the films examined were "benevolence and perseverance". Again, in the list of UNESCO values, it was determined that the value of "benevolence" was emphasized the most. Considering the research results and studies in the literature, it can be said that educational films or scenes can be an effective material in the value transfer process.
