Mapping gender inequalities in education and training

Education, which is determinant on many areas of social life, can also be effective in the formation of gender roles. Education as an important means of socialization is able to reproduce the current gender-based work distribution in terms of traditional values and norms as well as make contribution to the acceptance of gender equality on the basis of justice. For this reason schools, via their cultural forms and data transferring processes, have an important role in preserving the existence of the traditional gender based stereotypes and the sovereign values or in the alteration for justice. In this master's thesis, whether the gender inequalities exist in the Turkish education system or not and if available, the ways in which these inequalities are reinforced through education are considered as the main problems. In the study which has been carried out in Antalya and the qualitative research model has been adopted in principle, interviews have been made with teachers and school administrators through the in-depth interview technique and a semi-structured interview form. In this context, the examples and narratives obtained from the analysis of the interviews with participants have been thematically categorized. Thus the investigation of whether the apparent or implicit mapping gender inequalities are in being in the Turkish education and training system or not, if any, the determination of reflections of the existing inequalities on school atmosphere and the ways for reproducing these inequalities within the education schedule have been aimed. According to the results of this study conducted at a secondary school in a central district Kepez in Antalya province and supoorted by Akdeniz University The Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit (BAP), it has been observed that the vertical segregation in education and men's overrepresentation in the school management occupations exist. It has been emphasized that women are less sufficient in authoritative classroom management when compared with men. Participants in this study, who witnessed the slang expressions by both male and female students, have been more likely to condemn the ones by women. In addition, male students have been subjected to more physical sanctions.
