Examining the learning needs towards nonviolence in education: Developing a nonviolence curriculum proposal in education

The purpose of this research is to determine the learning needs of 4th grade primary school students regarding nonviolence in education and to develop a "Nonviolence Teaching Program Design in Education". The study group of the research, designed as a case study from qualitative research approaches, consists of 4th grade primary school students studying at a public school in Kayseri city center in the 2022-2023 education year. Criteria sampling technique, one of the purposeful sampling types, was used to determine the study group of the research. In this context, the criterion was determined as 'to study at the 4th grade of primary school'. Taking this criterion into account, 12 people were determined as participants. The interview technique was used to collect the data of the research. Interviews were held with primary school 4th grade students, teachers and parents. The interview questions were prepared by the researcher and expert opinion was taken in order to ensure the validity of the scope. After the necessary arrangement was made in line with expert opinions, the pilot application was made, and the interview forms to be applied to students, teachers and parents were finalized after the pilot application. Descriptive analysis technique was used in the analysis of the data. Before the data obtained from the student, teacher and parent interview forms in the pool of students' learning needs for nonviolence in education, the goals of the draft program and other elements of the program (content, educational status and evaluation) were tried to be developed in the future. Needs analysis results; It revealed that more studies should be on the concepts of 'peace in teachers' and 'respecting differences' in students and 'tolerance, cooperation and justice' in parents. Based on the results of the needs analysis, in order to develop the "Nonviolence in Education Curriculum Draft", activities have been tried to be prepared by using international children's books and sources that process international and national leaders who can be remembered with non-violence in life principles. It is thought that the draft of nonviolence in education curriculum will make it more effective for students at the 4th grade of primary school to realize the importance of nonviolence with different activities and to express their feelings without violence.
