Opinions of teachers and school managers on the use of social media in education

Abstract (EN)

In this research, teachers and school administrators' opinions who works a private secondary and high schools about the use of social media in education has been examined in the context of "gender, branch, age, years of service, the task variables". The samplings are the teachers and administrators who work in private secondary and high school in Ankara Gölbaşı district. 250 questionnaires were distributed, 163 of them were collected and only 150 surveys were suitable to evaluate. 150 questionnaires answered by 130 teachers and 20 school administrators, 46 of them in secondary school, 81 of them private Anatolian high school, science and social science high school, and the 23 of them belong to private vocational school teachers and administrators. Demographic information is located in the first section of the questionnaire. In the second section, entitled implementation there are questions about social media, internet usage goals, internet usage levels and internet usage environments (Demir 2001). In the third part there is attitude scale which consist of 17 question. The attitude scale is about usage of internet and social media in education. It was developed and its reliability, validity was tested by Demir. It was seen that the survey's Cronbach Alpha rate was (α= 0.857). The findings showed that the scales have reliable structure. Kolmogrov Smirnov, Kruskall Wallis H and Mann Whitney U years were used to analyses the research data. According to research findings there was a significant difference in gender variables for educators the benefit of females but according to other variables it was not recorded any significant differences. Eventhough the school administrators and teachers have positive opinion regarding to use of social media in education but they respected following items most: it helps to find suitable study materials both in class and out class, it enriches the class environment, it helps to improves the level and effectiveness of the education and, it increases the motivation of the students. The educators usually use mobile devices to access social media. It was understood that they use social media tools to little which was developed for educational purposes. Arguments and suggestions were developed accordingly.
