The effect of the questions used on educational Web pages on learning outcomes and their sustainability

PREPARED BY: AYSUN AYDOGMUSNAME: THE EFFECT OF THE QUESTIONS USED ON EDUCATIONAL WEBPAGES ON LEARNING OUTCOMES AND THEIR SUSTAINABILITYABSTRACTThe effect of the questions that are used in educational web pages on the success andpermanency of learning.The aim of this study is to determine the effect of using pre-questions, contextualquestions and using both of them together in educational web context.In this research, ?First Aid? unit in ?Traffic and First Aid? lesson on 8th classes hasbeen studied. Four different contextual web pages have been used to explain ?The importanceof first aid?.Besides the visual graphical designs of web pages are organized according to web-based learning materials? principles and the visual difference of the four materials have beentaken into consideration. So, effects of attention and learning that may arise because ofdesign have been reduced.The study has been carried out with students in 8th class. The first three weeks,explanations and information have been given about the subject and the last week a test havebeen applied. The whole study has been finished within four weeks. After two weeks, arecollection test has been applied. Forty students who attended this study have been selectedfrom those 8 classes according to the results of ?the student acknowledgement inventory? .The students have been seperated into four groups which were established in threeexperiment groups and one control group whose members are selected coincidentally .During the lesson, web pages prepared with pre-questions have been used in the firstexperimental group, web pages prepared with contextual questions have been used in thesecond experimental group and web pages prepared with both pre and contextual questionshave been used in the third experimental group. In the control group?s web pages no questionshave been used.At the end of the study, a final test have been applied to all of the groups to seewhether there are differences between these groups? learning abilities or not.Since this study has been applied in four groups and to find out the differences oflearnings between the groups Kruscal Wallis test technique has been applied. Differenceshave been noticed between groups. Mann whitney U test has also been used to find out thereasons of these differences.At the end of the analysis a considerable difference has been noticed about the rates ofsuccess of leaning in the groups. Especially the difference of the rates of success of learningin the first and third group and second and fourth group was really identifiable.There was no considerable difference in recollection test results except the thirdgroup; so that, the third group was able to remember the learning points better than the othergroups.The hypothesis which claims that ?there is no difference in the rates of success oflearning between students who have studied contexts without questions and students whohave studied contexts with questions? has been refuted according to the considerabledifferences mentioned above.
