Abstract (EN)

Muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and muscle protein breakdown (MPB) are effective in the regulation of skeletal muscle mass. If muscle protein synthesis is more than muscle protein breakdown, it increases muscle mass. Muscle protein synthesis is associated with dietary protein and exercise. This research is to investigate the relationship between quality and quantity of dietary protein and muscle mass in adult women wıth exercise and non-exercise. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the quality and quantity of dietary protein intake with muscle mass in adult women who do and do not exercise. The study was conducted between December 2019 and February 2020 with 11 adult healthy women aged 20-40 who were members of a private gym, 13 adult women with similar characteristics to the study group who did not exercise constituted the control group. Personal characteristics, nutrition and sleep habits of individuals were determined using the face-to-face method. 3-day food consumption records were taken to determine the daily intake of energy, macronutrients and micronutrients. Anthropometric measurements are carried out Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), rigid tape measure and registered height meter. International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form was used to perform physical activity. The average age of individuals is 30.4±5.8 years. There is a positive significant relationship between the average daily protein (g) intake and muscle mass (kg) of individuals who do not exercise (p <0.05). There is a positive and significant relationship between the daily intake of energy (kcal), protein (g), plant protein (g), carbohydrate (g) and fat (g) and muscle mass (%) of individuals who do not exercise (p<0.05). It has been observed that there is a positive significant relationship between the average daily tryptophan intake and muscle mass (kg) of individuals who do not exercise (p<0.05). There is a positive significant relationship between the actual protein values of the daily diets of exercising individuals and the protein digestibility corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) and muscle mass (kg) (p <0.05). When the intensity and duration of physical activity are evaluated, there is a positive significant relationship between the medium and high intensity physical activity durations of the individuals who exercise and the muscle mass (kg) (p <0.05). As a result, intake of the quantity of protein (g) and the quality of the protein taken with the daily diet and the intensity of the exercise affects the muscle mass.
