The problem of low birth weight infants born in the hospitals of Elazig city center and the factors affecting these babies

This research has been done in the public and private hospitals of Elazığ, to determined the rate of low birth weight infants and conducted to determine the factors afffected.In this cross-sectional and descriptive type study, 802 (38.5%) infants were availabled for delivery amoung the 2086 infants who was born in the hospitals of Elazığ city center on 1 December 2010 to 28 February 2011. The birth weights of the research group babies weighed 5-10 minutes after than born and connected to their mothers to ask 55 main questions and the bottom of the main questions with face to face interview tecnique with a questionnaire consisting of questions.The average birth weight of infants in the study group 3100 ± 53.7 g (min: 760 g, max: 5000 g) infants who were included in the form of researching group. According to the our researching, incidence of low birth weight was found to be 10.7%.In our study, maternal age, week of birth of the baby, having a planned pregnancy, smoking cigarette during pregnancy, using vitamin preparations before pregnancy and during the pregnancy, the additional food consumption during pregnancy, during pregnancy and in pregnancy, the weight gain during pregnancy, pre-pregnancy weight, passed the physical and psychological travma and physical exercise during the pregnancy, duration of pregnancy to get follow-up were founded effective on the low birth weight (p<0.05). Father's height, tea and coffee consumption during pregnancy, any working in a job during pregnancy and using the iron preparations during pregnancy, monthly income were not founded effective on the low birth weight (p>0.05).As a result, many different factors are involved that affect the baby's birth weight. And the correction of these factors that affecting negatively to low birth weight and studying about this problem, as well as significantly reduce the risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality.Key Words: Elazığ, Low birth weight, Rate
