Ill ABSTRACT Masters Thesis THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF DRINKING AND USING WATERS OF ELAZI? CITY Özlem ÖZTEKİN Fırat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Geological Engineering 1998, Page: 124 Physico-chemical properties of Karaçalı and Haroğlu spring waters and the well waters of settlements have been investigated in this study, this study includes the Elazığ city and its close vicinity. Because of this, water samples have been taken from various points at the periods of high and low groundwater level. According to the meteorological datas of Elazığ, the mean precipitation is 427.2 mm. and the mean temperature is 12°9 C over 63 years. There are various aged units crop out in Elazığ and its close vicinity. The age of this units range from Paleozoic to Cenozoic. Permo-Triassic Keban Metamorphics, Cenonian Elazığ Magmaties, Maastrictian- Lower Eocene Hazar Group, Lower Paleocene Kuşçular Formation, Middle Paleocene-Lower Eocene Seske Formation, Middle Eocene Maden Complex, Lutetian-Upper Oligocene Kırkgeçit Formation and Pliocene lagunar formations outcrop in the investigated areas. In the studied areas formations bearing groundwater are Keban Metamorphics, Elazığ magmatics, Seske Formation, Kırkgeçit Formation, Pliocene aged conglomerates and Pliocene aged silt and sandstone. The origin of the anions and cations is described according to the chemical analysis of water samples. By the help of the chemical analysis' datas Schoeller, Piper, Triangle, bar and circular diagrams have been drawn, the relationship between the chemistry of waters and lithology is found and the hydrochemical correlations have been made. The major ions in the water samples are Ca+-, Mg+2 and HCO3". The mineralization of waters recharging from magmatic rocks is lower than the water' recharging from sedimentary rocks. Polluting materials aren't determined in water samples' bacteriological analyses. And the waters are suitable for drinking according to Turkish Drinkable water standarts. KEY WORDS: Elazığ, drinking waters, Karaçalı Springs, Haroğlu Spring, Schoeller Diagram.
