Determination of recycling potential of solid wastes in Elazığ city

CITY Özge HANAY Fırat University Graduate School of Natural And Applied Sciences Department of Environmental Engineering 2003, Page : 64 In this study, the recycling potential of the solid wastes in Elazığ city was investigated. This study was carried out in three stages. In the first stage; a questionnaire was carried out since households have the main role for separating at source. In this stage, mainly the views of the public to the recycling of solid wastes were determined. At the end of" this stage, it was shown that the joining in recycling activities was high in Elazığ city. In the second stage; to find recycling rates, the pilot study was carried out in several sites which have different socio economic levels. According to this pilot study, it was found that the highest rate and the lowest rate was 9,29%, 4,5%, respectively. The recycling rate to Elazığ was 7%. In the third stage the recyclable materials which were collected in the pilot areas were sold to recycling industries and it was determined that the benefit was 22 $ per 335 kilograms. It was Calculated that the recyclable material of 6930 ton and the benefit of 455. 1 04$ could be yearly obtained. Key Words : Solid waste, recycling, questionnaire survey.
