Abstract (EN)

Kahramanmaraş is one of our provinces that has developed in the field of handicrafts, especially in weaving, from the past to the present. Turkmens living in the region have made a great contribution to handicrafts, especially weaving, due to the highland-winter life of sheep growing. The town of Elbistan, a Turkmen settlement, is famous for its bristle tents and weaving with kirkit since the Ottoman period. The traditional carpet weaving of Elbistan district of Kahramanmaraş province was chosen as the subject of the research. Within the scope of the research, 80 carpets were identified and handled as a result of the field research in the district of Elbistan. These weavings were processed on the work information forms prepared for each weaving according to their motif, color and composition features. This information was transferred to charts and analyzed. For each of the regional carpets, motif analysis was made and the drawing was made in the Nedgraphics Texcelle program. With the motif and composition features of Elbistan carpets, 5 carpet designs were applied by taking inspiration from the works unearthed in the excavations in the region. In addition, 3 experimental weavings were produced from thermal power plant themed designs. Carpet weaving, which was seen as a profession in the region in the past, is not practiced today. It is important that the research revitalizes the carpet weaving in the region and that the carpet motifs are drawn and transferred to the next generations.
