Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, unique hardware/software design, development, and prototyping of a new generation intelligent battery management system for electric vehicles were carried out. The system can determine the battery chemistry and automatically apply the appropriate management parameters aiming to take advantage of the superior properties of different batteries chemistries in conjunction. When the battery chemistries used in electric vehicles is examined in the literature; these were determined to be NiCd, NiMH, NCA, LFP, LTO and LiS. Therefore, battery chemical composition determination algorithm, software and hardware parameters of prototype electronic circuit boards have been determined based on these battery chemistries. Thanks to the algorithm developed by following a statistical analysis-based approach to determine the battery chemical composition, five different battery chemistries have been identified with 100% accuracy within a few seconds. The hardware and software, which can determine the chemical composition of the battery, can also automatically adjust the appropriate management parameters; in this way, it supports multi-chemistry battery management. In addition to allowing the use of superior features of different battery chemistries together, the effectiveness of a switching mechanism designed to benefit from these features at the most appropriate time has also been demonstrated by the simulation study. All these features can be controlled via a user-friendly touch screen, thanks to the original software and hardware developed. The dissertation study was carried out in three stages. The first phase was supported within the framework of the TÜBİTAK 1512 program. In the second stage, it was supported by the BAP Unit of İnönü University within the scope of the Priority Area project. In the third stage, it was supported within the scope of the BAP Doctoral Thesis project and at each stage, the first, second and third versions of the hardware and software were developed, respectively. The developed battery management system is presented in comparison with other battery management systems in the literature based on its functions.
