Özet (EN)
Kinetic energy generated by electrical transportation vehicles during breaking period can beregenerated and stored in a suitable electrical energy storage unit. By this way, the energyefficiency of the vehicle will be increased dramatically.The main subject of the thesis which includes energy efficiency and railway transportationsystems is to explain the applicability of energy storage systems to the railway transportation.The thesis has been prepared as five chapters which it?s first is an introduction to the topic.In the second chapter, both DC LRT system and regenerative braking energy are inspected.Today?s modern energy storage systems which are significant part of the thesis are explainedin the third chapter. The current storage systems are described in detail while regenerativebraking energy storage is examined as well. An example related to the subject is given fromGermany.Chapter four is a kind of evaluation of the previous sections. The goal of the chapter is todefine the amount of energy that is generated by regenerative braking in vehicles running inIstanbul?s LRT system.The last chapter covers the conclusions produced by the study. As a result, an appropriateenergy storage system is able to reduce dramatically both cost of operation and investment ofelectrical transportation systems.Keywords: Energy storage, CAES, Railway transportation, Regenerative braking, Flywheel,Super capacitor, Batteries, SMES.JURY:1.
