Investigation of relationship between apelin and running performances of short, middle and long distance elite male runners

Abstract (EN)
This study -as one of the preliminary study subjects showing the relation between apelin and training performance- has been carried out to investigate the elite level short, middle and long distance male runners' performance's acute effect on apelin, glucose, insulin levels, hematologic and biochemical parameters and apelin's relation with those parameters. 10 short, 10 middle and 10 long distance runners who are aged between 18 and 22 and actively do sports participated in the study. Short distance runners run 100 meters, middle distance runners run 1500 meters and long distance runners run 3000 meters. Pre and post running blood samples were taken from all runners in order to find out apelin, glucose, insulin, hematologic and biochemical parameter level of runners. Runners' anthropometric and strength measurements were done, too. SPSS 21.0 statistical program has been used to analyse the data and p<0.05 was determined as the meaningful value for the study. While a meaningful increase has been observed among short and middle distance runners' apelin level (p<0.05), such a meaningful increase hasn't been observed for long distance runners. While glucose value has noticeably been seen as increased (p<0.05), insulin values have been observed as decreased (p<0.05). Changes at hematological and biochemical parameters have been observed, too. On the other hand significant relation has been determined between apelin value and hematologic parameters (p<0.05). Triumvirate comparison of pre and post-running blood samples from runners belonging to three categories has shown that while, there is a meaningful difference between glucose, MCV, MCH, HDL and VLDL levels (p<0.05), Triumvirate comparison of runners' anthropometric characteristics and power values have shown that there has been a meaningful difference between weight, body mass index, aerobic power, peak power, relative peak power, average power and exhaustion index levels. In conclusion, meaningful difference at short and middle distance runners' post training apelin levels and lack of meaningful difference at long distance runners' apelin levels have shown that training programmes with anaerobic qualifications have more influence on apelin than others.
