A comparative examination of Garibü'l-Qur'an and garib words in Elmalılı's tafsir of "Hak Dini Kur'ân Dili"

In our study, we have examined the garib words, which are considered within the scope of "Garîbü'l-Kur'an" in the work of "Hak Dini Kur'an Dili" by one of the famous scholars of the last century, Elmalılı Muhammed Hamdi Yazır, in comparison with three dictionaries. Elmalı Hamdi Yazır is one of the last great scholars of the Ottoman Empire. Throughout his life, he has been busy with science and has written various works. Dozens of studies have been done on his life and interpretation. There have been many editions of the tafsir that we are working on. There are also simplified copies. The tafsir of Hamdi Yazir of Elmalılı is not similar to the tafsirs that follow a method. His tafsir is multifaceted and contains both narration and wisdom tafsir features. Due to its versatility, it has been the subject of different studies since the day it was written. The author does not have an independent work on "Garîbü'l-Qur'an". However, he made some evaluations while explaining the verses. Based on those evaluations, we tried to reveal Elmalılı's approach. In our study, we only examined the words that take place in different languages and dialects and therefore are accepted as "garîb".We have determined that the author explained twenty-seven words as "garib". The first Arabic dictionary, Halil b. Ahmed el-Ferâhîdî's "Kitabu'l-Ayn", one of the basic Qur'anic dictionaries, Râgıb el-İsfahânî's "al-Müfredat" and Hasîrizade Elif Efendi's "en-Nûrü" from the Ottoman period Qur'an dictionaries. We evaluated them in a comparative way with his works named "I-Furkan". Before giving an explanation of the word, we presented the verse in the Qur'an as a whole. With this method, we wanted the meaning of the word to be understood correctly in the whole verse. We consulted the works of the scholars of the dictionary that we had determined for each word. We have conveyed the information contained in them about the relevant word in a comparative way. In the conclusion section, we briefly evaluated the information we obtained as a result of our research and included the opinions we reached.
