The impact of retirement on households' recreation and culture expenditures:a study on Turkey

The time factor assumed to be the determinant of the expenditure on recreation and culture is the focus of this study. In this thesis, based on Gary Becker's "Household Production Theory", results of the logistic analyses which uses data of the 2013 Household Budget Survey of Turkish Statistical Institute support this evidence. The results of a multivariate logit analyses suggest that retirement, total household expenditures, and education are significant factors that affect household expenditures on recreation and culture positively, in Turkey. In addition, in order to better understand the dynamics associated with the move to retirement period, potential factors that enable individuals to experience cultural goods are identified separately for both retired household and near-retirement household. Determining the possible factors affecting the recreation and culture expenditures of retired and near-retired households provide useful insights for policy makers as well as the suppliers of recreational and cultural goods and services.
