The effect of music on pain, anxiety and vital signs in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography patients

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of music played to patients before the Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio pancreatography (ERCP) procedure on anxiety, pain and basic vital signs of the patients before and after the procedure. This randomized controlled trial was conducted with a total of 70 patients (35 in the intervention and 35 in the control group) who underwent ERCP in the ERCP Unit of the General Surgery Clinic in Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Hospital between November 24, 2020, and February 11, 2021. Pre- and post-operative data were collected with the 'Demographic Information Form' and 'Patient Follow-up Form'. The pain and anxiety levels of the patients were evaluated using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain and Visual Analog Scale (VAS-A) anxiety, respectively. Number, percentile, mean, standard deviation, chi-square analysis, dependent sample t-test, independent sample t- test, Friedman test, Wilcoxon Sign test, ANOVA, and Mann-Whitney U test were used in the data evaluation. When the anxiety and pain levels of the patients were examined, there was no statistically significant difference found between the intervention and the control group. However, the anxiety levels of the patients in the intervention group were determined to decrease in the postoperative period (p <0.05). In the vital signs of the patients, there was no statistically significant difference in the systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation values between the control and the intervention group (p <0.05). The results of this study revealed the positive effects of listening to music on the post- operative anxiety levels of patients that would undergo ERCP. Therefore, we recommend the use of music intervention on patients in the pre-ERCP period. Keywords: ERCP, Music Intervention, Anxiety, Pain, Vital Signs.
