Energy assessment and conservation measures in certain industrial facilities in Gaziantep

Effective and economic energy use is critical for the success of any industrialfacility since energy consumption makes one of the primary costs during production.There are simple and well-proven measures that can be taken to improve theeffectiveness of the energy use and energy conservation in industrial facilities. Someof these measures include insulation to minimize heat losses, use of efficient motorsand other energy consuming equipment, using heat recovery systems, changing thefuel, using high efficiency lighting, reducing the cost of compressed air, andenhancing productivity. We believe that energy use by Turkish industry is notefficient enough and there is a large potential for more effective use of energy as wellas energy conservation. This is explored with this thesis by studying two industrialfacilities in the city of Gaziantep. Our investigation in Superfilm - a filmmanufacturing plant-show that many sites with energy conservation opportunitiesexist. The total savings potential in this facility are estimated to be 869,000 YTL,equivalent to about 650,000 USD per year. This value represents 15.8 percent of thetotal energy consumption in the facility. We also identified various energy savingmeasures for Yünsu-a textile manufacturing plant. The estimated total savings inthis facility turns out to be 585,000 YTL, equivalent to about 438,000 USD per year.This value represents 58.5 percent of the total energy consumption in the facility.The payback periods for the identified measures for both facilities are justified.Key words : Energy savings, Energy consumption, Energy conservation, Energyefficiency, Energy usage in industry
