Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, we perform energy and life cycle analysis (LCA) of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) applications in historical and modern buildings. The procedure and formulation of thermodynamic and life cycle analysis are provided for developed HVAC models and they are applied to a historical mosque located in Gaziantep, Turkey (Kurtulus Mosque) and a modern residential building. The descriptions of architectural designs, construction materials, thermal properties, and operation schedule of selected buildings as well as the thermal simulation program which is used to calculate the heating and cooling loads of the buildings are presented. The alternative HVAC system models are developed and described in detail both for historical and residential buildings. The comprehensive mathematical simulations for these HVAC system models are developed first for subsystem level and then for constructed subsystems of each HVAC system in order to represent the system package. The thermodynamic analyses of the proposed HVAC systems for both case studies are evaluated using a series of simulation programs, which were developed using EES (Engineering Equation Solver) software. The LCA methodology used in this thesis follows the international standard ISO 14040 guidelines. SimaPro software is used to model the life cycles of the developed HVAC systems.Key words: Energy analysis, life cycle analysis, historical buildings, modern residential buildings, HVAC applications.
