ABSTRACTMaster ThesisTHE CONTROL OF THE ENERGY TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS WITH UPFCM. Mustafa ERTAYFırat UniversityGraduate School of Natural and Applied SciencesDepartment of Electrical Education2006, Page: 103Due to many reasons such as, an increasing demand for energy, the constraints in the buildingof new transmission lines and the disadvantages of the conventional compensation devices, it hasbeen necessary to maximised the benefits of existing energy transmission systems. An in-depthanalysis of the options available for maximising the existing transmission systems, with high level ofreliability and stability, has pointed in the direction of power electronics. The rapid development of the power electronics technology, makes it possible thedevelopment of a new technology for the control of the power systems, called ?Flexible AlternatingCurrent Transmission Systems (FACTS)?. During the last fifteen years under the title ?FACTS?technology a number of control devices have been designed and implemented around the world. The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is one of the most important device among theFACTS devices. Since UPFC, makes it possible to control all parameters that effects power flow is themost versatile of the FACTS devices. In this thesis basically two studies have been done. Firstly, FACTS devices have beeninvestigated. And then, modelling and simulation of an energy transmission system that includesUPFC and a load is realized. For this purpose a literature survey corresponding to FACTS deviceshave been performed. As a result FACTS devices are classified and their applications, basic circuitarrangements and working principles are generally investigated. And then UPFC has been investigatedin detail, an appropriate mathematical model of UPFC for the purpose has been obtained. By using theequations that belongs to energy transmission system and control schemes corresponding to UPFC,modelling and simulation of an energy transmission system that includes UPFC and a load is realizedin the MATLAB/Simulink.Keywords: Energy Demand, Energy Transmission Systems, Flexible Alternating CurrentTransmission Systems, Power Systems, Computer Simulation.
