Optimization of substation installation in energy sector: Application for Eryaman region

Substation optimization is positioning a substation or substations which capacity meets demand for the region in a most suitable point with minimum cost. Multiple data are collected from Turkish Electric Distribution Incorporated Company ? TEİAŞ for the substation which is going to be positioned in Eryaman region. The points that substations will be placed are considered linear. Eryaman region is divided into 9 equal sectors - each 6 km2 and feeders are placed to meet the demand of each sector. Two different substations are placed on two different points to meet the demand of 9 sectors. Each substation has two transformers. Using informations for capacity of substations, power, voltage drops and service interruptions were calculated for 10-year planning period, divided into 5 periods from which each period is 2 years. Each used criteria represents one constraint. Established model serves for the objectives noted below;- Determining the optimal point and size of the substations in the given planning period with minimum cost,- Meeting the demand of the sectors without any service interruptions.The model is solved with GAMS program and optimal results are obtained. Two substations must be installed in Eryaman region with capacity of 50 MW to meet the demand of the region. Also 9 different feeders must be placed for each region. To test the applicability of the model for larger systems, the number and capacity of the substations and transformers are increased and the obtained results do not violates optimality. It is found that the established model is also valid and successful as well.Key Words : Substation, Optimization, Balanced Distribution.
