The place,the evaluation and the handling of the sports course in physical education for the disabled

THE PLACE,THE EVALUATİON AND THE HANDLİNG OF THE SPORTS COURSEİN PHYSİCAL EDUCATİON FOR THE DİSABLEDWriter: Hakan ÇEVRİM1. ABSTRACTThe present study aims to assess the place and teaching of the physical education courses inthe curriculum of the schools for the handicapped.Scanning method was used as research model. The subjects consisted of 35 women and 55men, totally 90 volunteer teachers of physical education working at the schools for the mentally,visually handicapped and deaf, in a total of 22 cities from seven different regions (These citiesincluded Erzurum, Elazığ, Malatya from Eastern Anatolia; Diyarbakır, Sanlıurfa, Gaziantep fromSouth-eastern Anatolia; Ankara, Eskisehir and Kayseri from Central Anatolia; Samsun, Ordu andAmasya from The Black Sea Region; Antalya, Adana and Afyonkarahisar from TheMediterranean Region; Denizli, ?zmir and Usak from The Aegean Region; ?stanbul, Bursa andÇanakkale from The Marmara Region). A questionnaire was used as the data collection tool. Itwas designed by the researcher and consisted of 37 items, 6 of which were about the teachers?personal information and 31 of which concerned the teachers? views about the topic. The internalreliability coefficient (Cronbach Alpha Coefficient) was calculated as ? = 0,70. Chi-Square (X2)was used at the meaningfulness level of 0,05.As a result of the questionnaire applied to the teachers of physical education teaching atthe schools for the mentally retarded, blind and deaf learners, a statistically meaningfuldifference was found between the findings about the teachers? willingness to participate inseminar and educational programmes within the academic year and the findings about thehandicapped individuals? having sports equipment and materials for the physiacal education andsports courses.Due to both the applicability of the curriculum and poor physical conditions of school,classroom and gyms and social and economic deficiencies, both the teachers giving the physicaleducation courses and the handicapped students themselves encounter many problems regardingthe applicability of the programme within an academic year.As a result of the study, it was seen that programmes of physical education, according tothe students? handicaps at the schools for the handicapped, were applicable through limitedoppurtunities and physical conditions. And it was also surprising to find out that the programmewas more suitable for the normal primary schools? physical education courses rather than for thehandicapped.
