The effect of music on pain in aspiration procedure applied to intubated patients

The research was carried out using pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental model to investigate the effect of music on the pain level during aspiration procedure for intubated patients. Intubated patients who were followed in internal medicine intensive care unit, chest diseases intensive care unit, cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit and adult emergency department in Gazi University Medical Faculty Hospital in Ankara were included in the study. According to the power analysis, the study was conducted with 50 patients. Data were collected by using personal information form, Behavioral Pain Scale and Ramsey Sedation Scale. Mean standard deviation, minimum and maximum values, Wilcoxon Test, Mann Whitney U Test and Spearman's Correlation Coefficient were used to evaluate the data. According to the findings of the study, the effect of music performance on behavioral pain level was found to be significant (Z = -5.334, p = 0.000). The mean score of Behavioral Pain Scale before the music performance was found as 7.16 ± 1.47 and the mean score of Behavioral Pain Scale after music performance was found as 6.24 ± 1.41. Behavioral Pain Scale total scores of the patients decreased significantly after the music performance. It was found that music performance decreased pain level in all sedated and non-sedated patients. It was determined that the pain levels after the music performance had decreased as the sedation levels of the patients had increased. According to the results of the study, it was found that music performance decreased the pain level in the intubated patients during aspiration, sedative drug did not affect the pain level and a moderate negative correlation was found between sedation level and pain level.
