Abstract (EN)

Low-density Alder (Alnus glutinosa subsp. Barbata) and Poplar (Populus tremula) wood were impregnated with epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and synthetic resins (Epoxy, Melamine Formaldehyde, Vinyl Ester, and Blend of ESO and Epoxy (70:30)) and subsequently densified (25% and 40%). The retention level used was in the range of 100–150 kg/m3. The set recovery, water absorption, water repellent efficiency, anti-swelling efficiency, mechanical properties (impact bending test, compression strength, MOR and MOE, and Shore D-hardness), and thermal resistance of impregnated and densified wood were evaluated. For epoxy impregnation, the densified set recovery was 1.02% and 3.89% for 25% and 40% densification, respectively, in the case of poplar wood, while for alder wood, these values were 4.88% and 5.88%, respectively. Melamine formaldehyde impregnated and densified wood demonstrated the second highest effectiveness in reducing the set recovery, with values ranging from 9% to 12%. The set recovery of wood impregnated with ESO alone exhibited poor performance, ranging from 39% to 62%. However, through the combination of ESO and Epoxy, the set recovery significantly decreased to a range of 11% to 28%. All treatment approaches employed yielded enhancements in dimensional stability and mechanical properties. Mechanical properties of densified samples increased with compression ratios, except in the case of melamine formaldehyde impregnated and densified poplar wood.
