Examination of the relationship between no mobile phone phobia (Nomophobia) and sociodemographic variables, basic psychological needs satisfaction, trial anxiety, happiness in adolescents

The purpose of the research was to explain nomophobia levels regard to gender, age, high school type, grade level, the number of siblings, academic success, parental education status, financial status of the family, daily time of smartphone usage, intended use, situations used, basic psychological needs satisfaction, trial anxiety, happiness levels. The study population was comprised of high school students in 2018-2019 academic year in Niksar, Tokat. Stratified Random Sampling Method was used to determine the research sample. The research sample contain 561 high school students (349 female, 212 male) in Science high school, Anatolian high school, Vocational high school, İmam Hatip high school, and private high school at Niksar. Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q), Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale, Trait Anxiety Inventory, Oxfor Happiness Questionnaire Short-Form, and Personal Information Form were used in the research. Depending on data acquired from these scales, average and Pearson Correlation Coefficient for descriptive analysis, Multiple Linear Regression Analysis, T-Test for comparing two groups and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for comparing more groups were used. The research results indicated that there was significant relation between nomophobia and its sub-dimensions (not being able to communicate, losing connectedness, not being able to access information, giving up convenience) and basic psychological needs satisfaction, trial anxiety, happiness and these independent variables predict approximate 10 per cent of nomophobia of adolescents. It was found that nomophobia of adolescents differed in terms of gender, daily time of smartphone usage, intended use, situations used variables but it didn't differ in terms age, high school type, grade level, the number of siblings, academic success, parental education status and financial status of the family variables. Research results were discussed in the direction of literature and psychological counselors, parents, researchers and school administrators were offered.
