The relationship between perceived parental attitude and emotional autonomy and secrecy in adolescents

The main purpose of this study is to determine the predictive role of perceived paternal attitude and father attitude sub-dimensions (sensitivity, psychological control, behavioral control, autonomy support) on the total emotional autonomy and sub-dimensions of adolescents (non-idealization, independence, individuation) and secrecy tendencies. It is to examine in the study, mother attitude and father attitude perceived by gender variable; the aim of this study is to examine the relationships between total emotional autonomy and sub-dimensions and secrecy. The study group consisted of 565, 8, 9, 10, and 11th grade students attending the first semester of 2017-2018 academic year in Serik, Antalya. Paternal attitude and father attitude sub-dimensions (sensitivity, psychological control, behavioral control, autonomy support) constitute the independent variables of the study. The dependent variables of the study are emotional autonomy and sub-dimensions (non-idealization, independence, individuation) and secrecy.The Leuven Perceived Parenting Scale developed by Soenens, Beyers and Goossens (2004) and adapted to Turkish by Sevim (2014); The Self-Confidentiality Scale and Personal Information Form developed by Steinberg and Silverberg (1986), Emotional Autonomy Scale developed by Deniz, Çok and Duyan (2013) and the Self-Constraint Scale and Personal Information Form developed by Larson and Chastain (1990) and adapted to Turkish by Deniz (2010) had been used. Data collection tools were applied to students in the autumn semester of 2017-2018 academic year. T-test analysis showed that girls' mother attitude, responsiveness and behavioral control scores and father attitude behavioral control scores were higher.T-test analysis showed that men had higher scores of idealization of emotional autonomy sub-dimension and higher self-concealment scores of girls. The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that paternal attitude responsiveness sub-dimension is the predictor of all sub-dimensions of emotional autonomy (non-idealization, independence, individuation).In the individualization, paternal attitude sub-dimensions are predicted by sensitivity, psychological control, and behavioral control. The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that the father attitude responsiveness sub-dimension was predictor of all sub-dimensions of emotional autonomy (non-idealization, independence, individuation).Individualization is predicted by responsiveness and psychological control. The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that total emotional autonomy was predicted by responsiveness and psychological control in the sub-dimensions of paternal and father attitudes. Total emotional autonomy is predicted by the sub-dimensions of parental attitudes and responsiveness and psychological control. Self-concealment, paternal attitude and psychological control; the attitude of father is predicted by autonomy support, responsiveness and psychological control.
