Investigation of relationship between perceived emotional abuse and problematic internet use of adolescents

The purpose of this research is to examine whether there is a significant relationship between the emotional abuse perceived by adolescents and problematic use of the internet. The independent variable of this study is the perceived emotional abuse and the dependent variable is the level of problematic internet usage. The research involved secondary school students in 9th,10th,11th, and 12th grades in the 2017/2018 academic year in Aliağa-İzmir. This research contains 365 students consisted of boys and girls. Ceyhan and Ceyhan's (2009) Problematic Internet Use Scale was used to evaluate the problematic use of the internet amongst adolescents, and Aslan and Kabasakal's (2014) Perceived Emotional/Psychological Abuse Scale Short Form II for Adolescents was used to determine the level of perceived emotional abuse. A personal information form was used to obtain the demographic characteristics of the adolescents and their internet usage data. It was researched that if emotional abuse and problematic internet usage perceived by the students changes or not according to the sub problems and if there' s a significant relationship between them. At the end of the research it was determined that there' s a significant relationship between the emotional abuse perceived by the adolescents from their parents and problematic internet usage. It was determined that there' s a significant relevance between the education level of the parents and perceived emotinal abuse and problematic internet usage. On the other hand, there isn' t a significant relevance with the level of income. Keywords : Adolescant, Problematic Internet Usage ( PIU),Perceived Emotional Abuse(PEA)
