Determination of problematic mobile phone use with mindfulness and coping styles in adolescents

Abstract (EN)

The unconscious and excessive use of mobile phones, which are the products of fast developing technology, negatively affects the adolescents who have an important place among developmental periods. Mindfulness and coping styles play an important role in identifying and preventing negative effects. The aim of this study is to determine adolescents' problematic use of mobile phones and their mindfulness and coping styles. For this purpose, the study was carried out as a descriptive cross - sectional study. The population of the research consisted of 28.144 students who were studying in the 2017-2018 academic year in the high schools of the Antakya district of Hatay province. The sample consisted of 789 students studying in 6 high schools determined by the stratified sampling method. Sociodemographic Data Form, Problematic Mobile Phone Use Scale (PU), Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) for adolescent form and KIDCOPE were used to collect data. Number, percentage, Anova, Student t, Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis and spearman correlation tests were used to evaluate the data. The adolescents participating in our study total score of PU was 29.34±13.86, total score of MAAS was 60.04±15.17, total score of KIDCOPE active coping subscale was 6.32±2.52, avoiding coping subscale was 4.87±2.23, negative coping subscale was 2.60±1.87. It was determined that 85.4% of the adolescents had a mobile phone and 63.7% had their first mobile phone between the ages of 11-14. PU total and KIDCOPE active coping subscale scores of female adolescents were higher than males. There was a weakly negative correlation between MAAS with PU total, results, social communication, addiction, avoided coping subscales and negative coping subscale, results and PU total with negative coping subscale. There was a weak positive correlation between results, social communication, addiction and PU total with avoided coping subscale. It is recommended to provide trainings of mindfulness and coping styles in order to protect adolescent health, to improve problems and to take necessary measures by determining problems.
