Investigation of the internet and problematic internet usage behaviour of adolescents

The aim of this study is to determine the internet usage behaviours of adolescents, describe playing game behaviours on the internet and investigate the level of problematic internet usage. Furthermore, the correlation of general procrastination and academic procrastination the level of problematic internet usage, the time spent on the internet for playing game and the time spent on general internet usage on investigated. Also it is aimed at describing adolescents' ideas about internete qualitatively. The participents of study were 1088 high school students. The instruments used for data collection were "Problematic Internet Usage-Adolescents", "General Procrastination Scale", "Academic Procrastination Scale" and "Personal Information Form". The research findings reveal that adolescents use internet between 30 minutes and 15 hours per day, on average 3.42 hours. The more they use internet the more problematic internet usage behaviour they have. The adolescents mostly use internet on their mobile phones. The adolescents using mobile phones for internet have more problematic internet usage behaviour than the adolescents using lap top for internet. They mostly used for fun and spending time. Also, the adolescents using for fun, spending time and communication have more problematic internet usage behaviour than the ones using internet for getting information. The adolescents playing game on the internet for more than two people have more problematic internet usage behaviour the ones playing game for one person two people. Moreover, there were meaningful positive correlation between the daily average playing time on the internet and the general procrastination level, between the problematic internet usage and general procrastination, between the daily average playing time on the internet and academic procrastination. It is also determined that was a meaningful positive intermediate correlation between problematic internet usage and academic procrastination. Furthermore, it is determined that the adolescents see internet as a way of getting information. The adolescents expressed that getting information as the advantages of the internet is spending time a lot as the disadvantages of the internet.
