Examining the relationship between social media addiction, family life satisfaction and psychological well-being in adolescents

Abstract (EN)
The main purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between psychological well-being, social media addiction and family life satisfaction in adolescents and to test the mediating role of family life satisfaction in the relationship between social media addiction and psychological well-being. In the study, it is further aimed to examine whether psychological well-being of adolescents significantly differs according to gender, class, parental relationship, frequency of use of Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and WhatsApp. The study group consists of the students studying at Antalya Imam Hatip Anatolian High School, Aksu Science High School, Adem Tolunay Anatolian High School and Antalya Anatolian High School, which are affiliated to the Antalya Provincial Directorate of National Education, in the spring term of the 2020-2021 academic year. The study group consists of 581 high school students, 205 of whom are female and 376 are male. "Personal Information Form", "Social Media Addiction Scale for Adolescents", "Family Life Satisfaction Scale" and "Psychological Well-Being Scale" were used to collect data. The data obtained from the study were tested in SPSS and AMOS programs. T-test and ANOVA were used in the analysis of the study data. The study model was tested with the structural equation model and verified within acceptable fit values. According to the study findings, psychological well-being in adolescents does not show a significant difference according to gender, parental relationship, class, frequency of using Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram and Twitter. It was further found that family life satisfaction has a partial mediating role in the social media addiction-psychological well-being relationship.
