A study on the relation between adolescents coping strategies used in strees and the assetivenness level and some other variables

In this work, the main purpose is to investigate the correlation between thecoping style with stress and assertiveness level of the adolescents; and the effects ofthe variables such as sex, class level, and the education levels of parents to thecoping style and assertiveness.The research has been performed on 717 adolescents (416 male, 301 female) whoare continuing their education in Ankara Ayrancı High School and Ankara AyrancıAnatolian High School. The participants were the 1st, 2nd and 3rd class students ofthese high schools. The stress-coping style of the participants, who are assumed to beadolescents, has been evaluated by the Stress-Coping Style Scale (SCSS) proposedby Özbay (1993), and the assertiveness level has been evaluated by the RathusAssertiveness Schedule (RAS).In order to analyze the collected data, the correlation between the coping styleand the assertiveness scores of the adolescents is calculated by using the Pearsonproduct-moment correlation coefficient (r). Besides, in order to determine whetherthere exist any meaningful differences between the variables such as sex and theassertiveness levels; and the coping style depending on the individual and interactiveeffects, two-way ANOVA for independent samples method is used. In case of theexistence of meaningful differences in order to determine between which groupsthere exist meaningful difference, Benferroni Multiple Comparison Test is used.The results of the analysis showed that there exists a meaningful correlationbetween the coping styles and the assertiveness levels of the adolescents. Also theresults support that the variables such as sex, class level, and the education level ofthe parents have effects on coping style and the assertiveness levels of theadolescents.iii
