Evaluation of sleep bruxism in adolescents related with craniofacial morphology, measured by Bitestrip® and T-Scan®

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between % maximum bite force and craniofacial morphologies with presence of sleep bruxism in adolescent.The study comprised 34 patients aged between 13-16 years (mean age of 14.5 years) with complete permanent dentition. BiteStrip® is a single use small disposable electronic electromyographic device designed as a front line screener for bruxism. The BiteStrip® scores among the participants were B.S.score L: No bruxism; B.S.score 1: mild; B.S.score 2: moderate; B.S.score 3: severe.Percentage of maximum bite force analysis was measured by the T-Scan® Occlusal Analysis System. The T-Scan® III connects to the USB port of a windows-based PC or laptop. The output displays the percentage force per tooth and a two-dimensional arch view. The software features a zoom graph window as well as a patient chart for customizing an arch model. Craniofacial morphology measurement was obtained from conventional lateral cephalogram. A single examiner performed all the cephalometric measurements.In this study no significant differences was found between bruxers and nonbruxers through craniofacial morphologies, except for the difference in SBa (p<0,05) This measurement was significantly increased in bruxers. (BiteStrip scores® 1, 2 and 3) .Statistical analysis revealed no significant bruxism and % maximum bite force (p> 0,05); however significant differences of maximum bite force occurred between craniofacial morphologies of bruxers and nonbruxers, SBa, Ar-Go-Me, Sn-Ar-Go.Keywords: Sleep bruxism, bite force, craniofasial morphology, occlusion,adolescent.
