Investigation of the relationship between violence tendencies andsocial gender role attitudes of adolescents

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between adolescents' violent tendencies and social gender role attitudes. This study is performed in the type of descriptive and correlational. The sample of the study was determined consists of 871 high school students. The data of the research were collected through the"Personal Information Form", "Violence Tendency Scale" and "Gender Roles Attitude Scale". Number, percentage, arithmetic mean, min-max, and standard deviation were used to evaluate the descriptive results.Mann-Whitney U and Kruskall Wallis for the comparison of the violence tendency and gender roles attitude, the Pearson chi-square for the comparison of qualitative data and "Spearman Correlation Test" in the analysis of violence tendency, gender role attitude and age relationshipwere used. A validity &reliability study was conducted with the participation of 266 students in order to evaluate the convenience of the Gender Roles Attitude Scale to the high school students. Ethical approval, institutional permission, student and parent consent were obtained to carry out the study. A statistically significant relationship was determined between the violence tendency of the students and the egalitarian and traditional gender roles attitudes, which are the subscales of gender roles attitudes (p<0.001). As the traditional gender roles attitude increases, the level of violence tendency increases. It was determined that male students' traditional gender roles attitudes and violence tendency levels were higher compared to female students. The mean score of violent tendency of adolescents was found to be "excessive" as it is 54.0. As the education levels of the parents increase, adolescents were found to be statistically significant having less traditional and more egalitarian gender roles (p <0.05). In case of higher use of violence against adolescents, more traditional and less egalitarian gender roles were determined (p <0.05). Awareness studies on violence against adolescents and gender roles are recommended in order to eliminate cycle of violence among adolescents of the next generation.
