The Concerto for Bass Trombone by the American composer Eric Ewazen will be examined in this diploma thesis with focus on its formal structure and performance practice, supported by examples of musical notation. Eric Ewazen demonstrates his versatility as a composer; on the one hand he composes for orchestra, on the other hand for chamber music and solo instruments, whereby he gives brass instruments, especially the bass trombone, an important place in his works. Ewazen Bass Trombone Concerto is an example of new music in the classical style. The themes used in the concerto do not move within the structure of a tonal centre, but within a specific sound base. This concerto occupies an important place among concertos for trombone by contemporary composers. This study presents an analysis of the bass trombone concerto by Eric Ewazen.
