Chronotype properties of adult type attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and investigation of additional psychiatric diagnoses

Objective: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in childhood and can continue during adolescence and adult life. People have different chronotypes, including morningness and eveningness, in biological and behavioral terms. Psychiatric disorders are thought to be related to chronotype differences. The aim of this study was to investigate chronotype features of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and accompanying comorbid psychiatric diagnoses. Method: Our study is a cross-sectional study conducted in Çukurova University Medical Faculty. The study included 33 patients with ADHD. Adult ADHD Self-Reporting Scale and Adult ADHD Diagnosis and Evaluation Inventory were used toscreen for the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and to determine the cases to be interviewed. The subjects included in the clinical interview were the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD, the Morningness Eveningness Questionnaire, the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis 1-2 Disorders. All patients were evaluated according to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. Results: The frequency of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was 18.3 % in the patients who applied to the psychiatry out patient clinic for the first time. In patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, the incidence of eveningness was found to be significantly higher than the clinical population and control group. It was found that high comorbid psychiatric diagnosis was accompanied by of patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Conclusion: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is more common in adult psychiatric outpatient clinics than in the general population. Individuals with this disorder should be questioned in terms of differences in biological and behavioral rhythms and comorbid psychiatric diagnoses. More studies are needed on the chronobiological aspect of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
