The role of glycoslated hemoglobin levels and laboratory parameters in adults

Abstract (EN)

Hemoglobin A1c test is a clinical diagnostic tool used in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and in cases at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Routine laboratory parameters are critical for the assessment of general health status and early detection of potential health problems. In our study, we aimed to examine the relationship between Glycosylated Hemoglobin level and laboratory parameters. 17000 people admitted to Havza State Hospital between July 1, 2022 and July 31, 2023 were retrospectively screened. Of these, 500 people over the age of 18 were randomly included in the study according to the order of admission. The patients included in the study were divided into 3 different groups as HbA1c <5.7 non-diabetes, 5.7-6.4 prediabetes, and HbA1c >6.5 diabetes with reference to the HbA1c levels recommended by the American Diabetes Association. Considering that HbA1c varies with age, it was ensured that the mean age between the groups was similar. Biochemical parameters such as glucose, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, urea, creatinine, triglyceride, LDL, HDL, triglyceride indices were significantly different between the three groups. Similarly, hematologic parameters such as white blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin, neutrophils, lymphocytes, platelet/lymphocyte ratio, neutrophil/HDL ratio and lymphocyte/ HDL ratio were significantly different between the three groups. In our study, we found that the increase in HbA1c value significantly affected many biochemical and hematologic parameters. Therefore, we think that our findings will play an important role in determining the laboratory parameters that play a role in the transition from non-diabetes to prediabetes and from prediabetes to diabetes.
