The interrelation between the shooting performance and the hand, foot and eye dominances of the male adolescents

The aim of this study is to evaluate the interrelation between the shooting performance and the hand, foot and eye dominance of the male adolescents. A total of 218 voluntary male high school students, 110 of whom were left-handed and 108 were right-handed, attended the research. The participants were given the chance to do 5 trial shootings from 5 meters to the target for the purpose of warming up and introducing the target, with court tennis balls, by using first the right hand and then the left hand. Later on, the participants did 40 shootings total, 20 of which were with right and 20 were with left hand considering the hands they chose to use. The shootings of the participants which hit target inside the diameter of 60 cm were regarded as successful and others outside it were regarded as unsuccessful. The successful hits were scored between 0 and 20 hitting points, which were done separately for each of the right and left hands. According to the results of the research, except the hitting ratio of the left hand shootings according to eye dominance, the hitting performance differentiates regarding all the shooting variables according to hand, foot and eye dominances (p<0,01). While the hand and foot dominance are interrelated to all the hitting ratios of shootings in significant level, the eye dominance isn't interrelated to the hitting ratio of the left hand shootings. In addition, the right hand shooting ratio is interrelated to the eye dominance in significant level. The higher hitting ratio performances of the right and left hand dominant individuals are needed to be evaluated by considering the movement analyses, gender, training age, anthropometrical characteristics and cross dominance criteria. The right-handed individuals have better performance than the left-handed ones regarding the hitting ratio of hand dominant shootings. As the left-handed are disadvantageous in shooting performances, they should be better inspected during the trainings, they should be given frequent feedbacks, repetitions and reinforcers.
