Women in male dominated professions: Example of female drivers in transportation (taxi, bus, tram) sector in Antalya

Throughout history, professions have been sex-segregated. As in many sectors today, transportation is another sector dominated by men and exposed to gender discrimination. Although the positive developments regarding gender equality are increasing in various professions, this mentality -imposed by the dominant culture on the society- still continues to exist in the transportation. The understanding that women should not work as a driver in a bus, tram or taxi is based on cultural and religious values, as well as traditions and customs. Under these circumstances, women planning a career in transportation are affected by their own concerns and may have to abandon their dreams. Nevertheless, despite all these, a notable increase is observed in the number of women working in the transportation. The aim of this study is to investigate -based on their stories of choosing these professions- the reasons behind the interest why women prefer to work in this sector, to reveal the advantageous and disadvantageous situations they have experienced in this process, and to help women planning to work in this field to make the right choices by sharing the experiences of the participants. Accordingly, a total of 14 women -including 6 bus drivers, 6 tram drivers and 2 taxi drivers- were contacted in Antalya, and in-depth interviews were conducted with them. The results reveals that the number of women employed in this field is low and also positive discrimination practices are insufficient. In addition, it is observed that the participants are trying to establish a proper work-family balance as well as the various problems they face in business life. However, it is concluded that the participants who succeeded in solving all these negative situations by their own methods obtained a positive image in the eyes of the society and enjoyed their profession more and more every day.
