Investigation of the role of serum asprosine level in the development of TYPE 2 diabetes in male prediabetic patients.

Abstract (EN)

Prediabetes (PD), defined as blood glucose levels above normal but below the diabetes mellitus (DM) thresholds, is a condition in which there is a high probability of developing diabetes,. In recent years, both the number of PD and DM and morbidity and mortality due to these diseases have increased. This disrupts the quality of life of patients and creates a heavy burden on countries in terms of health expenditures. Considering all these conditions, it is of great importance to clarify the physiopathological mechanisms that cause DM development and DM complications as a result of PD. Asprosin is a peptide hormone that increases liver glucose production and is secreted from white adipose tissue. It also crosses the blood-brain barrier, directly activating orexigenic AgRP + neurons through a cAMP-dependent pathway, leading to increased appetite. It is known to increase both blood glucose levels and insulin resistance. The aim of our study is to evaluate the relationship between plasma asprosin level and other metabolic parameters in PD patients and to show that asprosin may be a marker for early diagnosis in PD patients. In this study, 39 PD and 38 healthy control patients who applied to the Inönü University School of Medical, Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic between 01.08.2020-01.03.2021 were compared and the relationship between the PD and healthy group with blood asprosin level was investigated. The data obtained from the patients was collected during routine control examinations. Determination of asprosin level was carried out by means of ELISA from the serology specimens taken during the routine control examinations of the participants. When we evaluated the findings we obtained in the present study, although plasma asprosin levels did not show a significant correlation between PD and healthy individuals, lower levels were observed in the PD group compared to the healthy group. Similar studies have reported higher asprosine levels in DM patients compared to healthy individuals, suggesting that different mechanisms play a role in PD patients. More studies are needed to enlighten these mechanisms.
