A research about the perception of masculinity of male social workers

Masculinity does not exist among the common study fields of the profession, in spite of having strong relations with the social problems that the profession focused. Men are generally not being assisted about the social problems that they have and/or cause. Masculinity can't be ignored any more in the overwhelming dynamism of social problems. 'Hegemonic masculinity' is perhaps one of the most powerful theoretical approaches to masculinity. The approach has an ongoing process to affect the professions and disciplines that work with individuals and society. Examples of blending the social work profession and hegemonic masculinity approach are insufficient. Masculinity is also significant in terms of being the gender identity of approximately half of those who practice the profession. In this context, "the perception of masculinity of male social workers" is an issue that may affect the quality of professional practice. The study attempts to measure male social workers' perception of masculinity and the relationship of these perceptions with various variables. 177 participants answered the participation form. "Form of Researchers" was also presented to the participants in addition to the scales named ASS and GEMS. The male social workers who participated in the study were found to be individuals with 'partly' sexist approaches and ambivalent gender emotions, especially in the household and non-professional private lives outside of professional practice. Another result is that they were carriers of hegemonic masculinity values. Although this ratio is unpredictable, it is thought that this situation may be reflected in professional studies. The research aims to contribute to a transformation practice of social workers, who are expected to reject dominant and widespread status quo products such as hegemonic masculinity and gender inequality, who aim at defending and strengthening the individuals weakened by the neo-liberal world order.
