Abstract (EN)

SUMMARY Study pattern: Retrospective, clinical study Purpose: The purpose of our study is to evaluate the consequences, activities and complications of magnetic growing rod system which is used for the treatment of patients with early onset scoliosis. Patients and Method: 10 patients (6 female, 4 male) who were treated surgically by magnetic growing rod implantation technique were included in the study. Average age of the patients was 7 years and 2 months (3 years and 4 months - 9 years and 11 months). Post-operative follow-up period of the patients was 4 years and 9 months (1 year and 5 moths - 7 years and 1 month). Cobb angle, thoracic kyphosis and lumber lordosis angles, T1 - T2, T1 - S1 heights obtained from the radiological data from preoperative, early postoperative and latest follow-ups were measured and the values were analyzed. Clinical and radiological findings obtained during the follow-ups were evaluated and the complications were noted. Result: After a mean follow-up of 4 years and 9 months, 10 patients with a mean age of 7 years and 2 months had a 28 ° (57%) correction of cobb angle. Elongation of 4.3 cm (23%) in length T1-L1 was achieved, while 6.7 cm (22%) in length of T1-S1 was obtained. Treatment of 6 patients had been finished. Magnetic growing rod system which is used for the treatment of patients with early onset scoliosis is a reliable and effective technique. This technique ensures the improvement of the deformity and the maintenance of spine growth with magnetic extending performed without additional surgery. It allows the maintenance of lung and thoracic development. Complication rate of long-term results is low.
