Socio-cutural education in early childhood: A action research on some significant events and facts belongs to Turkish history

The aim of the study is to make children know socio-cultural education and some significant events and facts of our culture in early childhood in which learning is fast. For this purpose, 4 themes whose importance were determined within the scope of historical events and facts and 17 activities that were aimed to make children recall within the context of these themes were applied.The study was conducted with 24 children of at the age of 6 in two early childhood education centers founded in the province of Sakarya during spring term of 2010-2011 academic year.The data collected by using action research in qualitative research designs, were obtained through observation, interview and document review. The activities used in the study were prepared within the context of the purposes and acquisitions found in the Early Childhood Curriculum (Republıc Of Turkey Ministry Of National Education, 2006). These data were interpreted by using qualitative content analysis and interpretive analysis.With the analysis of the data obtained, it was achieved that children recalled the subjects introduced within the scope of the themes determined in the context of socio-cultural education, perceived the past and concept of time, made a cause effect relationship between the past and present, and displayed basic skills.Key words: Early Childhood Edication, Socio-cultural Education, Social Studies Education, Historical Events and Facts
