Studying the "İstasyon Street" by means of modernization the Anatolian city in Early Republican Period: Ankara case

ABSTRACT Although city can only exist with the presence of society, it takes an active part in advance of society. Early Turkish Republic entered into a modernization movement with the aim of disclosing his social, political, and cutural goals into the anatolian city stage. The only possible way of following traces of the movement needs having architectural and urban history as well as the formal and informal or political and social ones. In this study, urban analysis of the period grounded on the concept of "istasyon caddesi" in that, Afyon, Eskişehir, Konya, and Ankara chosen as indicators of general railroad structure of Turkey; and capital city Ankara as a specific example. "İstasyon caddesi" is so important that, with the idea of modernization, it both donates the urban stage and gives way to schematize modernization policy and their applications within the everyday life of early republicans. And Ankara example is also important because of its being both the model and capital city of Turkey and its being a tool to reveal some forms of encountering between state and mass on the ground of pretentious and new urban fields.
