The effect of clinical features, laboratory and pathological dataon recurrence in early stage colon cancer

Objective: 30-50% of all locoregional CRC's relapse and cause death. Adjuvant chemotherapy reduces recurrence rates in patients with risk factor for relapse. However, various treatment related side effects are observed. Our study examines data which may possibly be recurrence risk factors. Patients and Methods: Our study included a total of 304 patients consisting of stage I (n=10), stage II (n=11) and stage III (n=183). File scanning method was used to obtain clinical, laboratory and pathological data of all cases. Findings: In terms of recurrence, none of the clinical features were found to be significantly differentiating. Laboratory findings indicate a high neutrophil/lymphocyte (p=.007), neutrophil/lymphocyte (p=.025) and monocytes/lymphocyte (p=.021) ratios and high CEA level (p=.017) are risk factors for worse HS. The pathology data shows tumor obstruction (p=.001), tumor perforation (p=.001), lymphatic invasion (p=.006), vascular invasion (p=.001), presence of perineural invasion (p=.001), tumor T stage T4 (p=.004), tumor subtype being non-adenocarcinoma BTS (p=.001), presence of tumor deposit in stage III patients (p=.001), and recurrence of high positive lymph node rate (p=<.001) in stage III patients are independent risk factors for recurrence. Conclusion: In addition to known risk factors for recurrence, high neutrophil/lymphocyte, neutrophil/lymphocyte and monocyte/lymphocyte ratios which may indicate systemic inflammation, pathological data showing the tumor to be non-adenocarcinoma BTS subtype, and a high positive lymph node rate in stage III patients were found to be risk factors for recurrence. Our findings need to be supported with more case series.
