Erol Güngör's idea of localism and religion

Localism and religion in Turkey, together with the modernization marginalized as two items of society and it has been ignored by many intellectuals and ruling sides in modernization policies. In this thesis, the relationship which Erol Gungor established between religion and localisation has been problematized without breaking the context of the modernization process. It has been explained that whether this relationship describes a continuity or a rupture by the inspiration of the idea of localism of Güngör. Accordingly, in non-Western societies, particularly in Turkey, localism and religion which ignored in the process of modernization policies and programs are actually a key concept for the process to be successful. In relation to this, being indigenous is not an attitude that excludes religion. Indeed, there is an undeniable affinity with religion. The religion that is alienated in society as a result of modernization is a content for awakening in Islamic countries and the localization is the method for the eradication of this modernization. The process which Güngör expressed in the form of "Islamic Awakening" and it is called the "Local Islamic Awakening "in this study emphasizes the possibility of Islamic countries being able to be modern only in the light of their own history, religion, linguistic and artistic values.
