Abstract (EN)

In the current study, features of colour, motif and composition of hand woven carpets detected in Erzurum, its districts and villages were studied in details with analysis charts. In the introduction chapter of the study, the art of carpet weaving was introduced comprehensively and the objective and method of the study were presented. In chapter one; after general information about carpet, a brief history of Turkish art of carpet weaving, general information about the history, geography and sociocultural structure of Erzurum were presented, historical development of the art of weaving in Erzurum, its technical features, acqusition of the material and yarn in the carpet, dying, acqusition of dying, practice of mordanting, equipmets used in wool dying were included in details. Also in this chapter, topics like equipment of looms, weaving preparation, knotting techniques and weaving were emphasized in details through photographs. In the chapter two, features of colour, composition and motif of about 70 carpets detected were discussed through chart analyses and photographs. Motifs detected in Erzurum carpets were classified by their types; their symbolic interpretation and menings were explained and ended with thier drawings. Again in this chapter, classification of Erzurum carpets by the types of usage "floor covering carpets, prayer carpets, pillow and cushion carpets and saddlebag" was made. Finally, in the chapter two, the current status of the art of carpet weaving in Erzurum were presented through charts and photographs. In the final and third chapter of the study was included the catalogue part of the carpets detected in the territory of Erzurum. Again in this chapter are the photographs of the carpets detected in this territory, catalogue analysis chart and thier interpretations. Finally, in this chapter, new designs were created employing the existent weaving samples and added to the part of catalogue. At the end of the study, a general evaluation and conclusion of the art of weaving in Erzurum was made, and the terms and resources used in the field of the art of carpet weaving were included.
